100 Banned Books: Censorship Histories of World Literature by Nicholas J. Karolides, Margaret Bald, Dawn B. Sova. 420 pages. Checkmark Books (1999) ISBN 0816040591.
Yes I am a geek, I like books with lots of useless information. This particular little volume and the other in the series, Forbidden Films: Censorship Histories of 125 Motion Pictures, represent many hours of someone else’s research. Each chapter begins with a summary of the book followed by its adventures at the hands of an insensitive and misunderstanding populace. Makes for fascinating & somewhat lurid reading. I had only half remembered the brouhaha about the unmasking of the expurgated edition of Fahrenheit 451, here is the tale in all its ignominious detail, along with Women in Love, Cujo, Leaves of Grass, Catcher in the Rye etc . . .
The book has been recently expanded into 120 Banned Books ISBN 0816060436, but I only paid $3 for the 1st edition. Looks like I have enough bathroom reading for quite a while.
