miscarriage of justice • The Literature Professor / Book Thief who pillaged the Bonn University Library of eight books got 18 months SUSPENDED sentence. The books dated from the 16th to the 18th century and collectively worth 250,000 euros (325,000 dollars) by replacing them with worthless copies, then erasing the library stamps, selling the books at auction and producing fake receipts as proof of provenance.

and most recently • Between the Covers is asking the assistance of the antiquarian book community in keeping an eye out for the following books, stolen from this past weekend’s New Jersey Antiquarian Book Fair on the morning of January 13, 2007:

What is it about Books, that our society thinks it’s not as bad as stealing ANYTHING else of comparable value? If one of steals $120,000 in electronics, you would get at least some time behind bars, steal that much in books, and you get probation.
