unsoliticted book recommendation: I want to recommend to all book lovers and collectors the 2005 Nikirk Lecture (Grolier Club) by Thomas Tanselle, “The Pleasures of Being a Scholar Collector.” It’s the best I’ve read on book collecting generally, and specifically on the reasons visiting bookshops not the Internet are still important; why non-first editions are important; why booksellers are usually very interesting people (I always liked their conversation better than academics); and why visiting used bookshops is more fulfilling than most other ways of buying and reading books. I understand the pamphlet is available from The Veatchs Arts of the Book. You will not be sorry. It’s beautifully written and a fulfilling picture of a bibliophile’s life.
